If your veterinarian has diagnosed your beloved pet with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) or you believe your pet may have AIHA, this article will help you understand the basics of this medical condition.

WHAT IS AUTOIMMUNE HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA IN DOGS AND CATS

AIHA is an autoimmune condition in which the red blood cells (RBC) are attacked, killed and removed by the immune system. AIHA is a type of anemia, which indicates there is a red blood cell deficiency. Symptoms for a pet that has anemia include an unhealthy pale appearance and extreme tiredness.

Red blood cells are the cells that are responsible for oxygen transport from the lungs to all parts of the body. There are other health conditions that may cause low red blood cell count, like blood loss and insufficient RBC production. Make sure your vet has ruled out these other potential causes and run several tests before your pet is diagnosed with AIHA.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF AUTOIMMUNE HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA

There are two forms of AIHA: primary and secondary AIHA. Primary is more common, in which the immune system produces antibodies to fight against red blood cells.

In the secondary type, red blood cells undergo surface modification brought about by the disease and its associated toxins. Because of the change in structure, the body deems the red blood cells as foreign elements, and so the immune system destroys them causing a cascading deficiency which leads to a deteriorating condition.

HOW TO PREVENT AUTOIMMUNE HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA IN DOGS AND CATS

It has long been known that autoimmune diseases cannot be prevented, but as more enhanced diagnostic reagents become available, AIHA diagnostic accuracy has also improved. This has translated to better management of the disease and, with care and tenacity, there are available long-term health management options for your pet.

After diagnosis, intensive therapy must be maintained until clinical remission has been achieved.

It is also important to detect the existence of any associated diseases and to apply appropriate treatment. In older animals, if your pet is also suffering from renal or hepatic disease, prognosis must be diligently determined.

SYMPTOMS OF AUTOIMMUNE HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA IN DOGS AND CATS

In both dogs and cats, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • Pale gums, rather than the normal pink to red color
  • Chronic exhaustion or gets tired easily
  • Fainting or disorientation caused by low oxygen supply to the brain
  • Increased heart rate
  • Lethargy and general lack of energy
  • Increased respiration rate with fast and labored breathing clearly visible
  • Dark urine – due to excessive bilirubin production
  • Vomiting
  • Poor appetite

AUTOIMMUNE HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA IN DOGS AND CATS SURVIVAL RATE/LIFE EXPECTANCY

AIHA has a poor prognosis with dogs, with reported mortality rates as high as 70% in older studies and a 40% mortality in more recent research. This decrease in mortality rate is credited to greater disease awareness, faster diagnosis, as well as availability of supportive care and blood products. For cats, recent research indicates the mortality rate is approximately 66%.

Since the mortality rate is so high, treatment must be aggressive and sick animals should continue treatment as instructed by your veterinarian.

In a number of studies some prognostic factors like serum bilirubin and urea concentrations are associated with survival. These variables are the focus of new research that will guide future clinical decisions.
