Side Effects of Deramaxx for Dogs & Alternatives

Osteoarthritis and other bone diseases can cause chronic pain and discomfort to your dog. Like humans, dogs also need different medications and treatments to help manage the pain, and slow down the progression of the disease. Deramaxx for dogs is specially formulated for dogs to control pain and inflammation. To know more about this drug, check out the following information.

What is Deramaxx for Dogs?

Deramaxx (generic name Deracoxib) is a non-narcotic NSAID (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug) that inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) or prostaglandins. Cox-2 is an enzyme that causes pain and inflammation in both humans and animals. Deramaxx is prescribed by vets to manage osteoarthritis pain in canines. This beef-flavored medication may also be ordered to relieve post-operative pain and inflammation.

Deramaxx Dosage and Route of Administration

FDA-approved Deramaxx (Deracoxib) medication is available in 12mg, 25mg, 75mg, and 100 mg tablets. A Deramaxx tablet is given as a single dose, once a day, with or without food. These beef-flavored, chewable tablets are scored and should not be taken in half-tablet increments. Only a professional veterinarian has the right to prescribe Deramaxx to your canine. The correct dosage is determined by body weight and type of ailment.

The following are the recommended dosages of Deramaxx:

For osteoarthritis pain and inflammation

0.45 – 0.91 mg/lb/day, once a day as required

For postoperative dental pain and inflammation

0.45 – 0.91 mg/lb/day, once a day for 3 days

For postoperative orthopedic pain and inflammation

1.4 – 1.8 mg/lb/day, once a day for 5-7 days

Bear in mind that a single tablet should not be divided in half or broken down into smaller pieces. For various dental and orthopedic procedures, it is best to administer Deramaxx before the procedure. The vet may adjust the individual dose while monitoring the dog’s condition until a minimum effective dose has been established. Deramaxx tablets should be carefully administered to younger dogs (4 months or younger), breeding dogs, and lactating canines.

Side-Effects of Deramaxx

Before taking Deramaxx medications, your dog should first undergo a series of physical and diagnostic tests. Your vet will ask you if your dog has a history of allergic reactions to sulfa-based medications such as aspirin and Rimadyl. You will also be reminded of the following side-effects of Deramaxx:

  • Moderate-high fever
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Easy irritability
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dehydration
  • Loss of interest in different activities such as playing, walking, etc.
  • GI disturbances
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Loss of balance
  • Apprehension and aggression
  • Skin allergies
  • Frequent urination

If your dog suffers from a Deramaxx overdose, immediately bring your them to the nearest animal clinic. Symptoms of overdose include abdominal pain, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, blurring of vision, and difficulty breathing.

Deramaxx Cost

A bottle of Deramaxx containing 30 pieces of 25-mg tablets costs $25 – $30 while a bottle of 75mg chewable tablets (30pcs) costs $75 – $95. One bottle (30 pcs) of Deramaxx 100mg tablets costs $102 – $125.

Deramaxx Drug Interaction

Deramaxx should not be used with corticosteroids and other forms of NSAIDs. NSAIDs are medications that can potentially harm the stomach linings when taken in larger amounts. Combining Deramaxx with another NSAID can be toxic to the stomach, intestines, kidneys, and liver. The combined effect of corticosteroids and Deramaxx is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. According to different studies, Deramaxx can be safely combined with anthelmintic, anesthetic, and antibacterial medications.

Ingredients in Deramaxx

The main active ingredient in Deramaxx is Deracoxib. This is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can be easily absorbed in the bloodstream. Deramaxx contains almost 90% of plasma (liquid in the blood) protein that is metabolized in the liver. Deramaxx contains active ingredients that inhibit prostaglandin, the hormone that induces pain and discomfort.

Deramaxx Alternatives

If you’re afraid of the possible side effects of Deramaxx to your dog, you can use more natural remedies in treating their pain and inflammation. Here are some of these alternatives:

Natural Herbs

Using herbs is one of the more natural ways of treating different kinds of pain in dogs. Some of these wonder herbs are ligusticum, corydalis, and ginger. These plants contain powerful analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial to dogs and other animals. You may consult a Traditional Chinese veterinarian for the right preparation.

Massage

This is also a powerful way to manage dog pain and inflammation. A gentle and loving massage can help relieve muscle soreness, tightening, and tension. Massaging your dog can be done at home. This can also be performed at an animal health and wellness clinic.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of Chinese medicine that is popular nowadays. This involves the process of inserting sterile needles into different acupuncture points in a dog’s body. This can also be done by applying gentle pressure to specific points of the canine’s body. Acupuncture can help treat different kinds of dog pain and inflammation. Make sure to hire a licensed professional animal acupuncturist to perform acupuncture therapy.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural plant extracts that provide a lot of health benefits to humans and animals. Some of the best essential oils for dog pain and inflammation are rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, and clove. Since dogs have a powerful sense of smell, you need to heavily dilute these essential oils. One of the most popular essential oils for dog pain is CBD oil.

CBD Oil

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a substance that is mainly found in the hemp plant. CBD oil only contains 0.3% of Tetrahydrocannabinol that brings different psychological effects to dogs. This makes cannabidiol not psychoactive and 100% safe and effective to use. CBD contains analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that help treat pain and inflammation. Aside from these, hemp extract also contains relaxing and mood-stabilizing properties.

You can use the following methods in administering CBD oil to your dogs:

  • CBD oil tincture
  • Incorporating to a treat
  • Topical application (to the affected part)
  • CBD capsules
  • Mixing with foods and drinks

Osteoarthritis pain and other kinds of pain can be physically and mentally challenging to your dogs. Deramaxx for dogs is a popular pain medication that can provide immediate pain relief and comfort. However, using pain medications for dogs can be dangerous. CBD oil is one of the better alternative pain treatments for dog pain. This hemp extract also provides other healing properties that can be beneficial for your dog. Before using different pain treatments, always consult your trusted vet. Lastly, give your dog abundant love and affection to speed up the healing process.
